Program description
Our course on the history of Russian art includes both weekly classes (lecture series) and extracurricular activities. It is designed for those who have a general interest in Russian culture. As part of the course, you will get acquainted with the history of painting in Russia, from the 12th century (Russian icons) to the late 20th century. We will cover the works of the most prominent artists such as Andrei Rublev, Karl Bryullov, Ivan Aivazovsky, Ilya Repin, Valentin Serov, Kazimir Malevich, Boris Kustodiev, and Aleksandr Deyneka. The lectures will also feature artistic movements such as the Itinerants and futurists. Historical themes will include the impact of Peter the Great’s reforms, the Patriotic War of 1812, and the Russian Revolution. We will look at the interconnections between art and Russian history. At the end of the course, you will gain an understanding of the history of painting in Russia.
